This page outlines Village Africa's progress in the areas of Health, Education, Building and Project Development.

Building Work in progress:

  • Secure store to hold motorbike, Village Africa's backup vehicle.
  • Watchman's toilet and bathroom.

Building Work recently completed:

  • Brickmaking to renovate two kindergarten classes at Yamba Primary School. Bricks finished April 08.
  • Further repairs to volunteer house in Milingano to improve security and also to protect against mosquitoes – finished April 08
  • Sinks, kitchen units and shelves added to Director’s kitchen to improve health of project staff – finished April 08
  • Classrooms for Std II and III painted in Yamba Primary School – finished April 08
  • Yamba Primary School - 4 school toilets renovated - finished February 08
  • Yamba Village Health post renovation - finished January 08
  • Yamba Primary School - Standards II and III classroom floors repaired
  • 6 toilets for Milingano Primary School
  • Renovation of volunteers' house in Milingano completed.

Health

Village Africa has sponsored salaries of a clinical officer and a laboratory technician in Yamba Village Health Post. 

  • Yamba Village Health Post has treated over 1520 cases from a five hour walking radius.
  • Health education sessions in Yamba Primary School have been led by the doctor with the help of local teachers and teaching volunteers.
  • Village Africa’s 4 wheel drive vehicle has taken patients to hospital.
  • Kiswahili posters on health matters have been made by volunteers for the health post.
  • The following items have been bought for the health post: bed, mattress, bedding, bedpan, microscope table and chair, weighing scales, dripstand, doctor’s instruments, instrument tray, saucepan to sterilize instruments, a large stock of medicines and dressings, surgical gloves, record books, stationery, clock, calculator and cleaning materials.
  • Health post toilets built.

Education

  • Village Africa is running a volunteer teaching programme in 2 government primary schools covering: English, Sports, Arts and Crafts and Singing.  The teaching programme has been running since September 07.
  • Yamba Primary School - Standards II and III classroom floors repaired and four old toilets renovated.
  • Adult English classes have been held in Milingano.
  • English lessons for some staff have been held in Yamba.
  • Children’s English books have been loaned to primary school teachers and pupils
  • The following gifts have been allocated:
    • Milingano Primary School – 100 desks, 2 teachers’ toilets
    • Yamba Primary School – 107 English textbooks and teachers’ guides, 2 pupils’ toilets, 2 cupboards to hold a large quantity of sports equipment and kindergarten teaching aids that have been donated, netball posts and assistance with classroom repairs.Local carpenters and builders are being used.  Villagers are supplying free labour and local materials as ‘local contribution’.  Land for a large sportsground has been purchased.  It will be used by Yamba Primary School, the young people, adults and volunteers.  As Yamba is steep, it will need levelling!

House renovated in Yamba for staff – to accommodate Laboratory Technician, Driver and their family.

House renovated in Yamba to accommodate 2 volunteers.  New toilet and bathroom built.

Sept 06    

House, kitchen and bathroom built in Yamba to accommodate 2 volunteers.  Common Room used as teacher training room.

Aug 06    

House renovated in Milingano to accommodate 4 volunteers.  New kitchen built.

July 06         

Garage built to accommodate 4 wheel drive vehicle

May 06        

Road to Yamba completed.  Villagers spent 5 months turning 3km of bush into a road to give vehicular access

Project Development

Land

The following land has been acquired:

  • Eight and three quarters hectares bought in a central position in Yamba for project accommodation
  • Two viewpoints in Yamba donated to the project and simple trails made to reach them.
  • Three large plots in Milingano given to the project by the village.

Housing

  • A large local house in Yamba has been donated to the project

Vehicle

  • Village Africa purchased a new Toyota landcruiser long wheelbase 4 wheel drive vehicle in Sept 06.  It is used to transport medicine, equipment, supplies, volunteers and visitors to the project.
